Wicked is keeping the magic going even after the film duology’s ending last fall, with Universal Studios announcing Thursday (July 23) that a concert experience featuring a live orchestra is “coming soon.”
Keeping details under wraps for now, the franchise’s official Instagram shared the news on a poster reading “Wicked in Concert: Film With Live Orchestra,” with leading ladies Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s hands holding in the center. “Everyone, we have an announcement…,” the caption reads, a play on one of Grande’s lines in the films.
The post was also shared by Hurwitz Concerts, led by film composer and conductor Justin Hurwitz. The organization has previously put on live orchestra-backed screenings of La La Land, Babylon and Whiplash, the scores of which Hurwitz composed; Stephen Schwartz created the music of Wicked‘s Broadway stage show and worked with John Powell on the film version of the score.
The first Wicked film premiered in November 2024, with the sequel, Wicked: For Good, arriving almost exactly a year later. Wicked grossed a record $758.1 million globally and reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with its soundtrack, while For Good took home $525.8 million worldwide.
The first movie also earned quite a bit of Oscar buzz, taking home best costume design and best production design, while Erivo and Grande both received acting nods. The two ladies have stayed busy since the whirlwind Wicked chapter came to an end last year. Erivo released an album, I Forgive You, in 2025 and starred in a one-woman West End production of Dracula earlier this year. Grande is currently on her Eternal Sunshine World Tour ahead of the release of Petal, her eighth studio album, on July 31.
