Leila Cobo, Billboard’s Co-Chief Content Officer, was honored with the 2026 Fulbright Colombia Excellence Award in the Cultural and Artistic Advocacy category during an intimate ceremony at the Residence of the United States Ambassador in Bogotá.
The Colombian journalist, author and professional pianist—whose selection was unanimous with the evaluation committee— was recognized for her professional career, ethical integrity, academic merit and contributions to cultural development. Cobo was presented with the statuette by Hugo Guevara, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., of the United States Embassy.
“A Fulbright scholarship goes far beyond academics,” Cobo, who formerly received a J. William Fulbright Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, said in a statement. “A Fulbright is a key that opens many doors, rooted in the understanding that we all have our own origins, our own cultural DNA, but that we are also citizens of the world, committed to building bridges and improving our collective existence. It is an honor to receive this award from an organization whose mission defines me.”
The acknowledgment comes just months after Cobo was promoted to Co-Chief Content Officer at Billboard, where she leads Latin and oversees country music coverage, as well as newsroom operations, and continues to oversee the culture-shaping Billboard Latin Music Week franchise, which is taking place from Oct. 19 to 22 at Miami Beach’s Faena Forum.
Established in 2007, the Fulbright Excellence Award “recognizes alumni whose professional work contributes to the country’s development and strengthens educational and cultural ties and mutual understanding between Colombia and the United States,” according to the press release.
Previous honorees include former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, scientist and educator Brigitte Baptiste and cultural journalist Bernardo Hoyos.
