England crashed out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Wednesday night (July 15), and Sir Mick Jagger and Liam Gallagher have had conflicting responses.
The Three Lions lost 2-1 to Argentina following two late goals, which brought a heartbreaking end to the squad’s quest for a first World Cup final in 60 years. The team last competed in the final in 1966 when it beat West Germany 4-2, and have appeared in three semifinals since, losing them all (1990, 2018, 2026).
Following Argentina’s first goal — a superb strike by Enzo Fernandez in the 85th minute — the TV broadcast of the event panned to Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, who was in attendance at the match in Atlanta. His disappointed reaction, which saw the rocker — the cover star of the latest issue of Billboard — pout his lips and shake his head, has gone viral, and fans are already calling it ripe for meme material.
Fans have even jokingly referred to the Jagger Jinx which, like Drake’s curse, has seen the side that the 82-year-old is supporting losing the match. At the 2014 tournament, the teams that he backed (England, Italy and Brazil) all failed in their bids to win the trophy. Four years later, Jagger was present for England’s semifinal match against Croatia which the team also lost.
Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, however, took the loss on the chin. “Respect to the lads it’s nobody’s God given right to win the WC,” he wrote on X. “Congratulations to Argentina best team won onwards n sideways.”
His comments come as the band’s song “Wonderwall” is in contention for the No. 1 spot on the U.K.’s Official Singles Chart this week. The song had been adopted by supporters and players on the team as an unofficial anthem, and saw a spike in streams and sales. In the midweeks, the Official Charts Company reported it was up to No. 2, trailing only Sam Fender and Olivia Dean’s record-breaking “Rein Me In.”
System of a Down, however, was clear who was to blame for the loss: the Gallagher brothers. NME reports that at the band’ show in London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday, guitarist Daron Malakian responded to chants from the crowd after England scored saying, “If you guys lose, I blame Oasis.” The feud between the two groups originated when Noel called the band “the s–tiest band of all time” back in 2001.
